Children have a right to a safe environment where they can grow and develop into responsible adults who contribute to society. Sadly, this is often not the case. The organisations in this sector focus on the needs and protection of children. We have been around for many many years and have impacted on hundreds of thousands of children via our extensive services.
Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) is an umbrella body that represents more than 263 member organisations and outreach projects in communities throughout South Africa. Together with its member organisations, they form the largest non-profit, non-governmental organisation in the country in the field of child protection, child care and family development.
Child prostitution, the use of children in pornography and the trafficking of women and children is an international phenomenon and a growing concern for South Africa. This is just one of many areas of focus within the Child Protection Programme of Child Welfare SA.
The Asibavikele programme for children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS has been operational since 2002 and is one of the largest responses to orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa. Child Welfare's Organisational Development Programme has a proven track record of more than 60 years and in its absence, CWSA will find it very difficult to render effective services at every level of its infrastructure, particularly in small communities and rural areas where there are few or no resources to approach for assistance.
For 30 years already, SOS Children's Villages has been making an impact on the lives of so many people, more especially the children in South Africa. We build families for orphaned and abandoned children. Eight to ten children are cared for in small family-type homes - the SOS families - and are raised like brothers and sisters.
The SOS Children's Village's South Africa is a private, charitable, social development organisation. It is politically and denominationally independent and is an affiliated member of SOS-Kinderdorf International.
Childhood cancer has a profound effect on everyone it touches. With empathetic support and the right information, it is possible to not only survive its ravages but end up stronger, wiser and more compassionate. It is with this focus on compassion, that CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA was founded. As a countrywide organisation, we provide holistic support for children suffering from cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.
